Bali has hundreds of tattoo studios. From budget shops in Kuta to high-end private studios in Seminyak, the range in quality is enormous -- and the stakes are high. A tattoo is permanent. Choosing the wrong studio can mean a poor result, or worse, a health risk.
1. Hygiene First, Always
The most important factor is hygiene. A reputable studio will never reuse needles, will use fresh ink caps for each client, and will have visible sterilization equipment. Don't be afraid to ask to see their autoclave or their needle disposal system. A clean studio will be happy to show you. If anything feels off -- walk away.
2. Look at Real Work, Not Stock Photos
Every studio's Instagram looks good these days. Dig deeper. Look at healed work (fresh tattoos always look better). Ask to see original photos, not edited ones. The best studios will have extensive portfolios on their artists' personal Instagram accounts.
3. Match Your Artist to Your Style
A fine line specialist is not the best choice for a bold traditional piece, and vice versa. Look for an artist who clearly specializes in the style you want. At Bali Family Tattoo Studio, each of our artists has a defined specialty -- we'll match you to the right person from the start.
4. Communication Before the Session
A good studio will want to understand your vision before you sit in the chair. If a studio rushes you to book without any real conversation about your design, that's a red flag.
5. Pricing Transparency
You shouldn't have to guess. A reputable studio will give you a clear quote after reviewing your design. Very cheap tattoos in Bali often reflect the quality of materials, the experience of the artist, or both.
