Getting a tattoo while traveling in Bali is one of the most popular things visitors do -- and for good reason. The island has a long history of art, spirituality, and body adornment. But getting tattooed abroad requires a little more planning than a session at home.
Time Your Session Wisely
If you're spending a week in Bali, don't get tattooed on day one. A fresh tattoo shouldn't be exposed to the ocean or soaked in a pool for at least two weeks. Get your tattoo in the middle or toward the end of your trip so you can enjoy the beach before your session.
Stay Hydrated and Rested
Don't get tattooed when you're dehydrated, hungover, or running on a few hours of sleep. Bali's heat and humidity mean you lose fluids quickly. Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours before your session, eat a good meal, and come well-rested.
Avoid Sun Before Your Session
Sunburned or very tanned skin is harder to tattoo and heals less predictably. If you're planning a session, keep your tattoo placement out of direct sun for a few days beforehand.
Have Your Reference Ready
Come with a clear idea of what you want -- or at least a mood board. References don't have to be exact. They help your artist understand your taste, style, and the feeling you're going for.
Plan for Aftercare
You'll need to moisturize your fresh tattoo regularly for the first two weeks. We provide an aftercare kit and a detailed guide, but make sure you have clean hands and unscented lotion wherever you're staying.
