A custom tattoo is one of the most personal forms of art you can wear. It may begin as a clear visual idea, a memory, a cultural reference, or simply a feeling that is difficult to describe. The artist's role is to turn that starting point into a design that works on the body and still feels like yours.

The short answer: our custom tattoo process moves through consultation, artist matching, design development, placement planning, final approval, tattooing, and aftercare. The best results come from clear references and open conversation, not from asking an artist to copy another person's tattoo.

Step 1: Share the Idea

Everything begins with a conversation. Tell us what you want the tattoo to represent, which visual elements matter most, and how you want the finished piece to feel. This can happen in person or through WhatsApp before you arrive in Bali.

What to include in your first message

  • A short description of the concept.
  • Two to five focused reference images.
  • The elements you like or dislike in each reference.
  • Approximate size in centimetres.
  • Preferred body placement.
  • Your available dates in Bali.
  • Photographs of the placement if it includes an existing tattoo, scar, or cover-up.

References help communicate taste and direction. They are not instructions to reproduce another artist's custom work line for line.

Step 2: Match the Artist to the Style

Not every artist is right for every style. Fine line, realism, black and grey, ornamental, lettering, and Bali-inspired work require different visual strengths. We review the idea and recommend the artist whose portfolio and approach best match the project.

If you already have an artist in mind, tell us why their work appeals to you. We will confirm whether the idea fits their current style and availability.

Step 3: Confirm Scope, Timing, and Quote

Before the appointment, we clarify the approximate size, placement, detail level, expected session length, and price structure. Large or complex projects may need more than one session. A deposit may be required to reserve the artist's time and design work.

Pricing reflects the full project: consultation, drawing, setup, tattoo time, materials, and the artist's experience. A small design can still require significant precision and preparation.

Step 4: Develop the Custom Design

The artist creates an original composition based on the consultation. They consider how the design reads from a distance, how details will age, how the shapes follow the body, and how the tattoo relates to nearby work.

For many custom projects, the final design is reviewed on the appointment day. This is common because artists need to protect focused drawing time and may make final adjustments after seeing the placement in person.

How revisions work

Useful feedback is specific. Instead of saying that something feels wrong, explain which element feels too heavy, too detailed, too symmetrical, or different from the references. Reasonable adjustments are part of collaboration. A request that changes the entire subject, style, or scale may require a new design plan or appointment.

Step 5: Finalise Size and Placement

The design must work on a moving, three-dimensional body. The artist may recommend changing the size or orientation so key details remain clear and the composition follows the placement naturally.

A stencil is applied before tattooing. Look at it while standing and from several angles. Check the direction, balance, and relationship to clothing lines or existing tattoos. Ask for repositioning if necessary. Nothing is permanent at the stencil stage.

Step 6: Approve the Design

Tattooing begins only after you understand and approve the final design, scale, placement, and quoted scope. Ask any remaining questions before the artist starts.

Do not feel pressured to approve a design you do not understand. At the same time, give the artist room to apply the experience for which you selected them. Good custom work is a collaboration between personal meaning and professional design judgement.

Step 7: The Tattoo Session

The artist prepares the workstation, opens single-use supplies, cleans the placement, and begins the tattoo. Longer sessions include breaks as needed. Tell the artist if you feel dizzy, unwell, or need to change position.

Arrive rested, hydrated, and fed. Wear clothing that provides access to the placement without rubbing against the finished tattoo. Our guide to preparing for a tattoo in Bali explains how to plan the day.

Step 8: Aftercare and Healed Review

After the session, the artist cleans and dresses the tattoo and explains aftercare. Follow those instructions rather than combining conflicting routines from social media. Healing depends on the design, placement, skin, and daily environment.

Once fully healed, send a clear photograph if the artist requests a review. If a small touch-up is appropriate, it should be assessed on settled skin rather than during the peeling stage. Read the full tattoo aftercare guide.

What Makes a Strong Custom Tattoo?

  • A concept with a clear priority rather than too many unrelated elements.
  • An artist whose portfolio matches the intended style.
  • Enough size and spacing for the important details.
  • A composition designed for the body placement.
  • Open feedback without copying another person's tattoo.
  • Realistic expectations for budget, time, healing, and ageing.
