Getting your tattoo done right is only half the battle. How you care for it in the days and weeks after determines whether it heals cleanly, retains its detail, and keeps its color.
Days 1-3: Fresh Wound Stage
Your artist will wrap the tattoo after the session. Keep it covered for 2-4 hours (or up to 24 hours if using second-skin/Saniderm wrap). When you first uncover it, gently wash with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat (don't rub) dry. Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer or aftercare ointment. Repeat 2-3 times daily.
Days 4-14: Peeling Stage
The tattoo will begin to peel like sunburned skin. This is completely normal. Do not pick, scratch, or peel the skin -- let it fall off naturally. Continue moisturizing. Avoid tight clothing over the area. Keep it out of direct sunlight.
What to Avoid
- Ocean, pool, or bath submersion for 2 weeks minimum
- Direct sun exposure on the healing tattoo
- Scratching or picking
- Fragranced lotions or petroleum-based products
- Excessive sweating in the first week
Long-Term Care
Once fully healed (4-6 weeks), always apply SPF 50 sunscreen to your tattoo when exposed to sun. UV is the biggest enemy of tattoo vibrancy over time.
